My birthday fell on a weekday, so we to take time off from work to go out and enjoy the day. For lunch we popped by Little Tokyo, a small collection of tiny Japanese restaurants tucked away off Arnaiz Avenue. We went to Kagura, which specializes in Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. We were the only guests at that hour, but we sat at the bar nonetheless to watch how they made those deceptively simple top-with-what-ever-you-like savoury “pancakes”.
Between the two of us we polished off two family-sized servings and a plate of tempura, catching the Japanese expats who came in to get take-out by surprise. I guess they didn’t expect two locals girls to put that much away? :D Afterwards, we made a quick stop at Donau Deli along Amoresolo Avenue for some breakfast bacon and smoked sausage.
We walked to Greenbelt 5 to see what else was there to eat. Classic COnfections on the second floor of was wonderful — simple, straightforward, sumptuous sweets without the designer price tag. I would’ve cheerfully blown PhP 500 for any of their solo cakes, but these little darlings only cost somewhere between PhP 100 and PhP 300. And then there were those wonderful handmade almond nut crunches with caramel and chocolate, and those cute and colorful cupcakes — both of which sell for less than half of the going prices at the chi-chi Serendra outlets. It’s safe to say that a lot of people on this year’s Christmas list are getting food.
